Wooden Leg was a northern cheyenne warrior who fought against custer at the Battle of the Little Big horn. Wooden legs culture believes in respect and value towards animals and nature. He lived in a reservation and was taught new things .Wooden Leg became a mixture of American Culture and Native culture when he converted to christianity because of his belief that it wasn't much different from Native Culture.
Wooden leg appreciates and valued his culture. He believes that uprooting nature is wrong as he says so "it is wrong to tear loose from its place on the earth anything that may be growing there". Wooden Leg stated that when something is cut off completely, the person responsible acted out of sadness and should pray for forgiveness". Even though Wooden leg has adapted to American ways he never fully commited those ways because its wrong.
Throughout the quote Wooden Leg is using Metaphors. He uses Metaphors when he says "The old Indian teaching was that it is wrong to tear loose from its place on the earth anything that may be growing there. It may be cut off, but it should not be uprooted." when he says this he refers it to culture, he belives that if you leave your culture to fully commit to a new one its wrong. He believes they should be "praying in foregiveness" because of his necessities. Wooden leg has adapted to some American ways but has mever uprooted his Native Culture, he stays true to his cultures beliefs, and traditions
Wooden leg argues that adapting to a new culture won't hurt, however being forced to completely detach from your culture is very difficult. Native Americans have always respected nature and eachother even though they have been stripped down from a large majority of their land and culture. He has learned and accepted American Culture, he still values his native roots. He belives by doing this it can help maintain his culture alive. I think its ok to learn and adapt to new things it expands your mentality on new things but never forget your roots which is what Wooden leg was asserting.
