John Green a very famous, American author, creator of "The fault in Our stars" and "Paper Towns" has a different evaluation of what he considers the American dream to be. The American dream is when you have the opportunity for prosperity and success, that " life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" as stated by James Truslow Adams. John Green thinks this so called American Dream is unrealistic or dead.
In John Green's quote in Let it snow: Three holiday romances he delineates this " American dream" with insane topics such as the quote " They had a dream that one day amid the snowy hilltops of western North Carolina, their son would lose his virginity to a cheerleader in the woman's bathroom of a Waffle House just off the interstate". A cheerleader, white cheerleader, popular, rich, blue eyes would be the perfect epitome of the classic American Dream. He uses satire to corroborate his point. Then John persists to say " My parents have sacrificed so much for this dream! And that is why we must journey on, despite all trials and tribulations!" in which he is in a way making fun of.
John Green also uses sarcasm (heavy irony) or what in this case would be considered " White Humor" to sort of bring light to a dismal topic. “Lady and gentleman, when my parents left Korea with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the considerable wealth they had amassed in the shipping business, they had a dream". In this quote he shows that he knows nothing about the what immigrants consider The American dream to be because he's white. Then the quote "despite all trials and tribulations! Not for me and least of all for the poor cheerleader in question, but for my parents and indeed for all immigrants who came to this great nation in what they themselves could never have: cheerleader sex.” His sense of "humor" is disrespecting immigrants by saying they will never have "Cheerleader sex".
In conclusion all John Green is doing is mocking, The American Dream because he believes it is non-existent. The rhetorical devices he uses are satire, irony, sarcasm, to show in a joking way that he doesnt believe. His interpretation is offensive because he must not know what immigrants really come in search for. Families immigrate to provide a better future/education for their families not to have "cheerleader sex". Personally I have family that wasn't looking for an extravagant life when they migrated here but for an opportunity for a greater education than they were given where they came from, and unlike the people here who think they take opportunities from them, they didn't just take anything, They worked hard to get where they are and have what they have and have all the right to be here just like any other American citizen who was born on this soil.
- Clear thesis
ReplyDelete- Work on transitioning into quotations and limiting the quote length
- Your analysis is mostly opinion (which should be reserved for the conclusion if at all) Instead focus in how he uses the technique of sarcasm
- Solid conclusion
